A large power station located 400km from a major population centre in Australia produces flyash which has exceptionally good performance as a supplementary cementitous material in manufacture of ready-mixed concrete. Because there is no direct rail ink at the power plant or at it terminal in the city, the flyash company adopted a multi-modal approach to achieving the target cost and volume for the transport of the material to its main market.

Using purpose built B-double trailer combinations for the short road transport section from the power plant to the rail terminal at source, and from the rail terminal at the destination, the operator was able to optimize the overall transport efficiency. Taking advantage of the low tare weight and high volume of the ISOTAINER Model ITV-27-4 the operator was able to achieve payloads on the road transport sections approaching 46 tonne.
